Electricity rates by state and appliance costs

Last reviewed Oct 31, 2026. Figures from the EPA ENERGY STAR data in this build and EIA prices.

The same appliance can cost several times more to run in one state than another. These are the average residential electricity prices from EIA for August 2026 (preliminary). Your own rate is on your bill: divide the energy charges by the kWh used, or use the price per kWh your utility lists.

Yearly cost = kWh per year × price per kWh. The last column shows what an appliance using 400 kWh a year (a typical certified top-freezer fridge uses about 363 kWh) would cost.
